Answers

When will minting of the Estonian euro coins begin?
Answer:
The Estonian euro coins will be minted after the decision to join the euro area will have been announced.
What is depicted on the common side of the euro coins?
Answer:
€2 and €1, 50, 20 and 10 cent coins feature the European Union before its expansion on May 1, 2004. Coins issued as of January 1, 2007 depict the geographic map of Europe. Only coins issued in 2008 or later have newer designs than those issued in Italy (incl San Marino and Vatican City), Austria and Portugal. 5, 2 and 1 cent coins depict Europe on a world map in relation to Africa and Asia.
What can we see on the Estonian euro coin?
Answer:
The winning design features the outline of Estonia and the word “Eesti”.
Have sample euro coins been minted for Estonia and can they be purchased in gift packaging?
Answer:
The accession of Estonia to the European Union has aroused the interest of coin collectors who wish to buy Estonian euro coins. Although Estonia is a member of the European Union from 1 May 2004, we need more time before the euro is introduced (and the first coins are issued).
Which are the abbreviations and symbols of the euro and euro cent coins?
Answer:
The euro symbol is € and the abbreviation is EUR. The euro cents do not have a special symbol.
Where do I find the € symbol on my PC keyboard?
Answer:
You need to press the keys AltGr and 5 simultaneously.
Who designed the Estonian euro coin?
Answer:
The winner of the design competition of the national side of the Estonian euro coin was the artist Lembit Lõhmus. His entry Hara 2 (No. 4) received 12,482 votes in the telephone voting.
Who selected the design of the Estonian euro coins? How was it selected?
Answer:
A competition was announced in June 2004 and 134 designs were submitted by the deadline of 19 October. A jury of experts convened by Eesti Pank selected 10 best designs, which were then given a total of 45,453 votes during a one-week telephone voting. The jury, which had made the decision on the ten designs in the national round in early November, approved the results of the telephone voting.
Are euro coins with the Estonian national side valid as legal tender outside Estonia as well?
Answer:
The common side of each coin is identical in all Member States, but the national side differs in each country. Despite different appearances, all coins are legal tender throughout the euro area, and so are the Estonian coins.
